FAQs about our residential electrical services

There are a number of electrical problems when you should call Lux Electrical as soon as you can. These issues include persistent circuit breaker trips, flickering lights, malfunctioning outlets, burning smells from switches or outlets, and any signs of electrical shocks. Such problems can indicate underlying faults like overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, or deteriorating components, which pose significant safety risks if not addressed by a licensed electrician. You should not attempt DIY repairs as this could be dangerous.

Signs of outdated or unsafe wiring include frequent electrical surges, discoloured outlets, a burning smell, or buzzing sounds from switches. Homes over 30 years old without recent electrical upgrades are particularly at risk. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's advisable to call Lux Electrical so we can conduct a thorough inspection.

It's recommended to have an inspection every 10 years for owner-occupied homes and every 5 years for rental properties. Regular inspections help identify potential hazards, ensure compliance with current safety standards, and provide peace of mind.

Yes, RCDs are mandatory for certain circuits in New Zealand homes. As per the AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules, all new circuits supplying socket outlets and lighting in domestic installations must be protected by RCDs. This requirement enhances safety by reducing the risk of electric shock and fire.

A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is a legal document that licensed electricians must provide upon completing specific types of electrical work. This certificate confirms that the work complies with New Zealand's electrical safety standards and has been tested for safety. Lux Electricial will provide a CoC for any new electrical installations or significant alterations to existing installations.

Give Lux Electrical a call. We can see if there is a reason they won't switch the power on and can carry out required checks and repairs.

During business hours and up until 9pm, we can discuss the issue with you and if it's urgent we have a fast call-out service.
For non-urgent repairs, we try to be there within two days.
